What Is The Difference Between Frappe and Frappuccino?

Typical coffee drinkers wouldn’t care if they are drinking a Frappe or if they are drinking a Frappuccino. Are you curious enough to know if you are drinking a frappe or a frappuccino? Check out the details below.

What is Coffee Frappe?

Traditionally made with instant coffee with water, sugar, and ice, this iced drink has been a popular choice among coffee drinkers in this modern era. The taste you might get would vary, depending on how the frappe is made.

You might also hear this coffee drink called as Greek frappé or Nescafé frappé. The most common frappe you will get in the market these days are made from instant coffee, water, sugar, and milkshakes.

The use of instant coffee has been required to create a frappe as it gives a more bitter taste and provides that distinct strong coffee taste. Not using an instant coffee might result in a different taste of the drink and would not provide that authentic frappe flavor.

It is said that the traditional frappe was invented through experimentation in 1957 in Thessaloniki, Dimitris Vakondios, a Nescafe representative. The word frappé is often spelled as frappe too.

What is Frappuccino?

Frappuccino is actually a line of blended iced coffee drinks sold by Starbucks. It is mainly made with coffee or crème base, blended with ice and ingredients such as flavored syrups. It is also usually topped with whipped cream and or spices.

In other words, it is a Cappuccino that is mixed with milkshake, sugar, ice, aerated cream and different variations of sweeteners like chocolate syrup. Caramel syrup is one of the popular sweeteners to create the Starbucks frappuccino.

Starbucks is able to find a way to cater non-coffee drinkers by creating a frappuccino that is coffee-free. This is made possible by using alternative means to create exciting flavor. One of their popular frappuccino flavors uses vanilla ice cream to create Vanilla Flavor Frappuccino.

If you are going to Europe, you might find the Frappuccino uncommon as there are few Starbucks outlets in the continent. But it should be more popular in the US as you can find Starbucks coffee shops in almost any part of the country.

What Are The Differences Between Frappe vs Frappuccino

Let’s start with their ingredients. You can tell which is frappe and which is a frappuccino when by checking if it is made with an instant coffee or a brewed coffee. Frappe uses instant coffee to enhance the thick foam and gives dark color of the drink. Meanwhile, frappuccino is produced by using brewed coffee.

When it comes to caffeine content, it is undeniable that frappe would always contain it. Whereas with frappuccino, you have the option to ditch caffeine by ordering flavors that don’t require coffee.

Sweetness could also help you determine if it is a frappe and a frappuccino. Frappe would usually taste less sweeter than a frappuccino, depending on your order and the toppings included.

One of their other differences would be the place where they are popular. If you are in Europe, most likely you won’t encounter frappuccino at all times. The same thing to frappe if you live in the US, it is less popular than the frappuccino.

If you are on the watch with your diet and need to lower calorie consumption, you should choose frappe as it contains less to no sugar. But if you have a sweet tooth and would want to indulge your senses into something satisfying, then frappuccino is for you.
